Thompson Pass

Description:

Valdez has been a mecca for heli skiing and snowboarding for the last 15 years. Thompson Pass receives between 600-900 inches of snow each year The main kitting area starts at ABA (Alaska Backcountry Adventures) and ends at the top of the pass. Camping is free and a RV rental is recommended. Also the Rendezvous Lodge is open for food and drink. There is a wind gauge at the top of the pass and is the windiest spot, so if it reads 30mph it will be 15-20 down by ABA . 20-mile glacier, Girls Mt, and the lower sub peak on Odyssey have been climbed by kiters. The terrain is beginner-expert. With helicopter access the snow kiting potential is limitless. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Wind:

The best winds are from the North. Wind direction typically switchs to the Southwest at the end of March. Best time to kike Thompson is December through March. If you plan on snowkiting Thomson pass in April you will most likely go skiing or snowboarding instead.
